Quick Christmas Tree Facts

Real Trees: The Ecological Choice!
QUICK TREE FACTS from the National Christmas Tree Association

There are approximately 25 - 30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year.

  • Approximately 350 million Real Christmas Trees are currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers.
  • North American Real Christmas Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada. Eighty percent (80%) of artificial trees are manufactured in China.
  • Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics and possible metal toxins such as lead.
  • Consumers can locate the nearest recycling program calling 1-877-EARTH911 or by logging onto www.realchristmastrees.org.
  • For every Real Christmas Tree harvested, up to 3 seedlings are planted in its place the following spring.
  • There are about 350,000 acres in production for growing Christmas trees in the U.S. While growing on farms, Christmas trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and soil and produce oxygen. This is a natural process no artificial tree can replicate.
  • There are about 15,000 Christmas tree growers in the U.S., and over 100,000 people employed full or part-time in the industry.
  • It can take as many as 15 years to grow a tree of average retail sale height (6 - 7 feet) or as little as 4 years, but the average growing time is 7 years.
  • The top Christmas tree producing states are Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Washington.
  • The top selling Christmas trees are: Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Noble Fir, Scotch Pine, Virginia Pine, and White Pine.
Ecology of the Living Tree Ecology of the Plastic Tree
Behold the magic of the living tree:
It purifies the air and gives abundant health
to you and me.
It traps the raindrops from the sky
To keep our springs from going dry.
It holds the soil in place to keep our rivers clean,
And gives the birds a home to rear their young serene.
It makes the children gay on every Christmas Day.
A never ending crop, as one is cut another takes its place.
For all the good that's done - its energy the sun.
Conserving oil postpones the day when that resource is gone
And when it dies and nature breaks its body down,
It does not die for naught but gives its substance to another plant
To feed its growth and to complete the cycle of the elements.
I think that I shall never see
A poem as senseless as a plastic “tree”.
A “tree” that wastes our nations oil
And doesn't decompose at all
But only adds to solid waste
Until the view is a disgrace.
When burned it makes a fetid smell
Which makes our world akin to Hell.
To celebrate our Savior's birth.
Why use the greatest fake on earth?
Poems are made by fools like me
But Satan made the plastic “tree”.

Poems by Norbert Noecker, long time Christmas tree grower and friend.
Norbert passed away April 10, 1994 at the age of 87.
