I LOVE Christmas traditions!!! Sending Christmas cards, wrapping beautiful gifts, baking cookies, but my favorite one of all is decorating the Christmas tree. Growing up in the 60’s, the beauty of my Grandma’s Christmas tree was magical to me! She always had a real one and I have such fond memories of decorating it with such love and care. I have a few of my Grandma’s ornaments but the one pictured has been my favorite my entire life. Every year at Christmas, I re-create that magic of her Christmas tree. We always get a real tree and we always will. Having lived in Kalamazoo for 26 years, I’ve had numerous Wahmhoff trees. When my kids were little, I remember cutting down our own trees at the farm. This years tree was purchased at The Hot Dog Stand on Westnedge as have most of our trees. It took us 5 minutes to get the perfect tree because they were all so beautiful!! I took down my tree yesterday. Sure, I’ll miss it. But I know that next year’s tree from Wahmhoff Farms will be just as beautiful and magical as this year’s. ~ Mary Rivera

$50 Runner-Up: Kelly Willetts, Portage MI
We get our tree every year at the farm (M40)… once we started going there with our kids there was no going back. We love the whole experience. We try to go the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The goal is to always find the tree that will reach all the way up to our ceiling (leaving room for the star, of course). Every single year we struggle to decide which tree it will be, and the kids wander and find trees they think are the best. The blue one was last years favorite, and perfect for our theme – every year we have a Who-feast with our kids, decorate our tree and watch the Grinch together- so the blue tree was their #1 choice (would The Who’s in Whoville have it any other way?) Unfortunately (for the kids), mama vetoed it, but she took its picture for their amusement. We did find the most beautiful Douglas fir, and wreath, and it kicked off the beginning of our season perfectly. Thanks for always making our experience fun and full of memories!

Last year, we moved in with my parents while we were in the process of buying a new home and selling our old house. As tradition tands, we still made the trip to Wahmhoff Tree Farms (in Gobles) to help my parents select the perfect tree.
Christmas is a BIG deal to my husband and I. We were happy to be apart of selecting my parents tree, but sad that we would not have our own family tree to decorate and enjoy throughout the season. We were primarily living in the basement of my parents house and it was crammed! My husband suggested that we still get a tree – it would just need to be smaller than we normally get. We cut down the cutest little tree, decorated it with some big, bright colored bulbs, and some of our favorite family ornaments! We found the perfect little corner spot in the basement for our baby tree and loved the sense of Christmas it gave us in our unusual location last year. Thank you for helping provide us with a wonderful Christmas memory – we will always be grateful for our baby tree! We are SO excited to head out to Wahmhoff Farms Thanksgiving weekend to get a HUGE tree for our new house! More great memories to be had!!! Here is the picture of my husband with our baby tree. I also included our family pic out at the Gobles Farm. Sincerely, Laura Wilson.

$50 Runner-Up: Elizabeth Georges, Chicago, IL
This year after visiting family in Michigan we stopped at Wahmhoff Farms and Nursery (in Gobles, MI) to cut down a tree. This was our first year with our 3 and 5 year olds visiting a farm to cut down our own tree.
We loved every minute, including watching the tree’s shadow as we drove it home to Chicago. Once inside, the 12 foot tree filled our house with a beautiful scent, and brought us the Christmas magic. It is our first year in our “forever home”, and we are happy to have started our new Christmas tradition – a tree from Wahmhoff Farms.

Ask anyone who knows me, and they will tell you that Christmas is my absolute, hands down favorite time of year. I never thought that I could possibly love Christmas any more than I did when I was a child, but then I became a parent myself. Through my children, the magic of Christmas came alive in a whole new way for me. My husband and I started and continue many family traditions during the Holiday Season with our children. One of my favorites has always been picking out the live Christmas tree that serves as our main tree. (Yes, I have more than one!) We always get hot chocolate before heading out to the tree farm to find “THE PERFECT TREE”. (Which we have always found!) The tree just seems to be waiting there for our family to come and find it. We love the look, feel and smell of a Fraser Fir. Another of my favorite traditions is having my children each pick out their own ornament every year. We purchased their “First Christmas Ornament” when they were babies, but after that, they have always picked out their own. This tradition has been so fun and allows us to see the evolution of our children’s interests over the years. My children look forward to finding that perfect ornament and take their hunt for it very seriously. Every year, these special ornaments are unpacked with care and we talk about and reminisce about every single one as my children put them on the “Kid Tree”. (Yes, they have their own!) Needless to say, the size of the “Kid Tree” has also needed to evolve over the years! This is a tradition that I am so very thankful that we started and I hope it is one that my children continue with their own children someday. It is a collection of precious memories that I look so forward to displaying every year. The accompanying picture is my husband Scott, my son Mason and my daughter Riley after we found THE PERFECT TREE at Wahmhoff Farms at the Gobles lot last year.
I CAN NOT WAIT to find this year’s perfect tree there, too!

Congratulations to our Runner-up winner in our Christmas Traditions and Photo Contest – Kim Brady
This is a picture of my son, Mason. He insisted this had to be our family Christmas tree! I laughed when I saw it and said “no way, it’s a Charlie Brown tree!” His face sunk and he looked up at me with his innocent sad eyes and asked “Why?” Truly he must be kidding. But then I started to think about it. Through his eyes, it was the perfect tree for him. It was just the right height for him to decorate and he could even reach the top to place the star all on his own. Needless to say, my husband cut the tree down and carried it over his shoulder as proud as if it was a 6 foot Fraser fir. In the end, we did get another tree to go along with Mason’s Perfect Tree.
How else would Santa fit all the presents underneath?
Going to Wahmhoff Farms in Gobles has become a Holiday Tradition. We look forward to picking out the perfect tree again this holiday season.

Christmas is the time for drinking eggnog, singing carols, and listening to the the story of Jesus’s birth. However, one of my favorite Christmas memories is picking out the Christmas tree. Every year we load into our Dad’s red truck, and we head off to Wahmhoff Farms. Dad would let us sit in the pickup while we shout through the peep-hole, “This is it! This is the one!” Dad would pull out his historic saw and start digging into the wood like it was gold. We’d cheer him on as his rusty old blades would screech in approval. Once the tree was cut, we’d circle around the tree, check the size, and smell the orange zest from the needles. After half an hour or so, we’d agree and pose with our new treasure. After the picture, I’d stash some pine needles in my pocket to smell later and we’d be on our way home. Getting the Christmas tree is something I’ll never forget, and it’s something I look forward to doing every year. Wahmhoff Farms never disappoints, and we’re looking forward to picking out our tree for many years to come! -Hannah Remington

Congratulations to our 2016 Christmas Traditions Contest $50 Runner-Up: Emily Lindsay!
Growing up, our family was very close with three other families. Every year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, our families would all pile into our minivans and go “Christmas Tree Hunting”, a tradition that we’ve done since all of us kids were just toddlers. Now, the children are all grown with children of our own, and we’ve lost a few loved ones along the way. However, every year we all still get together (now as Grandparents/Parents/Children/Grandchildren) and go find the perfect Christmas trees at Wahmhoff Tree Farms and then eat breakfast at (formerly) Shagnasti, now Robin’s Nest. Although we had frequented different tree farms over the years, we’ve settled on Wahmhoff and have gone there for the last 5 or 6 years, at least! We’ll be back this year, with even more little ones in tow :). – Emily Lindsay
